By Dog Lover | August 15, 2009

Hamsters are fantastic pets, particularly for youngsters. They are delightful to look after, they are quite happy to be with people and when handled most of them like it. They are as well fascinating and do not want intensive care unlike other animals. But prior to buying one it is best to know if it is a suitable pet for you. Even if hamsters are perfect for youngsters, for people living in small homes and for those individuals who do not get a lot of time for pets, caring for hamsters still requires commitment. Otherwise, your pet may end up been given to a rescue home.

To evaluate whether a hamster is good for you as a caged pet, here are several things that you must consider:

Hamster species are not the same- Hamsters come in varieties. And each variety differs in temperament, behavior, characteristics, look and suitability as your pet. There are aggressive hamsters and timid hamsters. Some of them though seem to have been made ideal for pets. There are also hamster species that appreciate the companionship of other hamsters of their own type, own sex and own age. Several of them, nevertheless, tend to become unfriendly towards other hamsters as they age, whether of their own type or not; consequently needing them to be kept apart from any other hamsters you may have.

Age of the would be owner- Depending on the age of the child a hamster should work well with them. In general though, young hamster owners should be supervised to guarantee that the pet is correctly taken care of and that important concerns are addressed. Several species could get very irritated when handled incorrectly and this may cause them to nip. To prevent such events, young owners should be advised regularly with regard to their care of their pets. Among adult owners however, particularly for those who are working during the day, hamsters make really good pets as they are happy to wait until evening for activities with the owners.

Availability of space- Hamsters, in general, are okay for small spaces. This is why they are popular among apartment renters and people who live in small houses. But it should be noted that there are some species of hamsters such as the Chinese hamster that require large cages to meet their need to exercise.

Personal preference- Variations in hamster species range from color to behavior. Each breed is different, so it is in the owners greatest interest to know his own preference when it comes to the type of pet they will keep.

The cage- It is recommended that to keep a happy healthy hamster that you buy the largest cage you can afford. As the more living space your pet has, then the happier and healthier it will be.
