Get a Feel for Basic Dog Obedience Training

By Dog Lover | July 31, 2009

Don’t get too excited with Fido as soon as you get home from the pet store it’s best to save the neat dog tricks until after you complete some basic dog obedience training.Similarly to the slow pace at which a child learns words before learning a language, dogs need to start receiving their training with elementary commands such as ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and ‘heel’.Expecting only the basics at the beginning causes the dog to respond to communication in general and to respond to your commands as his master. If only the basics are taught first, the dog will be an able pupil and will have an instinct to follow your commands.

When first training your dog, don’t expect that he is as skilled in obeying commands as a student studying for a Masters Degree. If you are overly dominating when teaching your puppy, you risk alienating him and losing his trust in you as a good master.  Use lots of love and rewards when your dog completes some obedience training. When the dog is rewarded, he will return to obey for both rewards and enjoinment, and will not seem frightened to perform tricks he only just mastered at the risk of punishment.

The methods of rewarding a dog and keeping him on a figurative leash are used to train puppies.  Rewarding the dog with treats and food is generally a more relaxed approach although not necessarily the best.  They may grow to expect the chewy bone after every single ‘roll over’ trick or simple ‘sit’ command.

As a result, some believe that requiring military-style obedience without rewards outweighs the initial easiness of “bribing” a dog to perform tricks. Therefore, the leash method, which underlines that the dog is subject to a human master, is considered to be more effective than the reward method, as it is believed to have the dog obey the master at all times without protest, in contrast to the reward method

However, using the leash method is not always successful.  Your dog must adapt and obey your commands with or without the leash.  This lays the relationship you have with your dog out on the table clearly and concisely, resulting in a much better behaved dog to be around.

Whatever method you choose, dog obedience training ensures the dog executes your commands positively rather than running rampant with no routine training. Therefore, as a result of basic dog obedience training you will have a behaved dog, an object that you can love as a best friend, and an entertainer for all of your friends.
