Quite A Few Things You Need To Take Into Consideration When Buying A Fish Pond

By Dog Lover | May 30, 2009

Every fish pond will need a pond pump. Pond pumps can also be used to create wonderful effects in your water garden. They can be used to animate the water in your fountain or waterfall and will provide needed oxygen to all the life in your pond. There will be several things you need to take into consideration if you are in the market for a pond pump.

One of the first things to think about is the flow rate you need for your pond. The determine your minimum flow rate for your pond take the volume of your pond and cut it in half. If, for example, your pond has 1,000 gallons of water the pond pump you select should circulate at least 500 gallons each hour. Depending on the various features you have in your pond you will most likely need a higher flow rate.

The pond pump you install will need to circulate sufficient water to meet the demands of your UV sterilizer and filter system. How your pond is used will also play a role in determining which solar pond pumps are best for you. Ponds which are small to medium in size, holding up to 800 gallons of water, will be best served by a submersible pump. They can be easily attached to submersible filters built for this size of pond.

The flow rates for submersible pond pumps are typically between 250 and 4,100 gallons per hour. These pumps will not cost much to buy and are placed inside the pond. While the initial price is usually low they will usually cost more to operate than external pond pumps. You will need an external pump for larger ponds. These types of pond pumps are usually more energy efficient and can handle a large volume of water. They are also made to operate with biological filters which can put pressure on a pump. The typical flow rates for external pond pumps are usually between 1800 to 7000 gallons per hour.
