Setting Up Your Tropical Fish Aquarium

By Dog Lover | May 30, 2009

Many people love fish and they also love having a aquarium in their home so that they can enjoy them. Setting up a fish tank is easy if one gets the proper PH level.

The tank water should be the perfect temperature for new tropical fish which can cost $30 or more. It is very frustrating to buy an expensive fish, put it into the tank, and then fo find it floating in the tan a day or two later. It’s an awful feeling too.

Getting started with a tropical fish tank can be quite a bit of work in the beginning, but is not too difficult to clean and maintain. Once the fish tank is set up properly, it is pretty easy to maintain. You must provide regular maintenance and cleaning.

First of all, determine the placement for your fish tank. Fish tnaks are extremely heavy and a fish tank stand should be used. or more. When placing the tank avoid direct sunlight of windows and doors due to fluctuating temperatures. Whether using a fish tank stand or not, you should place the tank in a lower traffic area of the room.

Many options are available when stocking your fish tank with tropical fish. A factor to take into consideration is the size of your fish. There is a general rule of thumb that you should have at least one gallon of water per inch of fish that you plan to keep in the tank.

You need to take into consideration the mass and width of the fish, not only the length. Determine the amount of waste a tropical fish will have. Balancing the type of fish in your tank can help minimize waste in the tank.

Next you need to make sure your fish tank is leak-proof, then decorate your tank with aqua-scape. This is the fun part! Clean off decorations with tap water before placing them in the fish tank. Then, place your heater near the filter output for maximized heating. Make sure that the lights, filter and heater are installed and working properly. Lastly, prepare your tank water with water conditioner.

Now you can add the tropical fish into to your aquarium. To add the fish and avoid shocking them, you need to acclimate them slowly. Give your tropical fish time to adjust to the tank’s water temperature by securing the plastic bag containing the fish to the side of the fish tank. Allow the bag to float there for about 20 minutes. Then, scoop out a little bit of the water from the bag and replace it with water from your tank.

Keep doing this until all of the water that is in your bag is tank water. This will allow the fish to adjust to the fish tanks water temerature and avoid shock. Fish tank setup is easy and aquariums can be enjoyed for many years!
