Training Aggressive Dogs – Things You Should Do
By Dog Lover | January 14, 2010
A major problem many dog owners face is dog aggression. Not only is it hard to be around an aggressive dog but it can be dangerous as well.
Training an aggressive dog is not as simple as say learning how to stop a dog whining or even dog training jumping dogs but it is very neccessary.
Before you do anything else you should find out what exactly pushes your dogs buttons that makes him act aggressive.
Is your dog exhibiting dog aggression towards other dogs?
If that is the case with your dog one thing you can do to get rid of some of his dog on dog aggression is to make sure you grab your dogs attention when you are approaching another dog.
If you have done any dog training with your dog you might be familiar with the watch me command. This is a great command and what is does is when you tell your dog to “watch me” they need to look you directly in the eye.
When you are able to get your dog to give you their full attention then you stand a great chance that they will proceed by the other dog without being aggressive.
You also want to make sure your dog cannot make direct eye contact with the other dog. When dogs make eye contact with each other they are challenging each other to prove who the leader is. When both dogs think they are the stronger leader that’s when dog on dog aggression comes out to play.
Another way your dog might be aggressive is with his food.
Some dogs can get very territorial and mean when food is in front of them. If your dog gets aggressive when he eats then you have to be very careful if you have children around.
One way to curb you dogs food aggression is to make sure he does not eat his meal before or at the same time you and your family eat. This will let the dog know that he is the low man on the totem pole which is very important when trying to curb dog aggression.
