Choosing a New Kitten – Moggies and Pedigrees
By Dog Lover | January 5, 2010
So you’ve taken the plunge and decided to introduce a new kitten to your life, the next step is to think about what kitten would be most appropriate. There are many different kittens for sale, and not all of them will be suitable for your way of life.
Your first consideration should be whether you want a pedigree kitten or a moggy.
Moggies
If you choose a moggy kitten (a kitten not of any particular breed, or indeed a mix between two specific cat breeds), then you can find them most places. Kitten classifieds on the internet, local paper advertisements, advertised in shop windows, or asking at your local vetinary surgery if they are aware of anyone who is looking to sell a kitten. You should be able to locate a kitten in your town with ease. Most likely, if a moggy kitten is your choice, you’ll be spoilt for choice!
Moggys are usually of a calm, friendly temperament, unless they are cross-bred with a known temperamental breed. It is usually safe to presume they are tolerant, and friendly with. They should also be less likely to fall ill and also easier on your wallet.
Pedigrees
On the other end of the scale, Pedigree kittens are often harder to locate, particularly if you have a specific pedigree in mind. If you’re intending to keep your pedigree kitten with children, you should consider researching the breeds you are interested in, and dismissing the kittens that have known issues with children! Breeds such as Siamese or Burmese cats have a tendency to strike and claw in this situation, making them an unsuitable choice for a home with children.
You should also be aware of any kitten breeds which are more prone to sickness, and those that actually have relatively short life spans, and take this information into account before finally choosing what kitten you want.
Having finally decided on the breed that suits you, your family and your lifestyle, many people choose to get their kitten through a reputable kitten breeder. Make sure that your pedigree kitten comes with all the relevant paperwork so you can be sure your kitten is a 100% healthy pedigree kitten. Also, don’t forget to research the average price of the breed you have chosen before handing over any moeny.
All the effort taken is worth it to find the ideal kitten for everyone, with any luck your kitten will be with you for the rest of its life.
