Having a snake for a pet
By Dog Lover | May 10, 2009
Now many people would like to own one of these slippery creatures, the idea of owning a snake seems a far more exciting prospect than a hamster. What do we need to know about looking after a snake?
- Snakes dont actually do much. Yup, you have a snake- very nice, but they just really slither around, eat mice and shed their skin. Not the most exciting pet to actually own in reality once the glamour has worn off, make sure you dont actually want an animal that craves attention.
- Snakes can be pricey. The bigger or more rarer breed of snake means the bigger the cost. Normal corn snakes can go for £25 and a pythons can go from anywhere around £350. Then theres the heating eqiupment for the enclosre, the enclosure where your going to need to keep the snake and the constant supply of mice to feed it.
- Do you have the room? Youll need a bigger enclosure for a bigger snake. A Boa could take up half of the room- when a snaller animal will take up muchless- say a hamster. Corn snakes or grass snakes dont taken up too much room though.
- Research the snake you want to get. Has the snake been defanged if it needs to be? How long can they stretch out at full length? How many times do you need to feed them? Whats the temperature the snake needs to be kept at? Get all the answers you can before getting one so you know preiciesly what your getting into.
- Age. Snakes can live to the ripe old age of 20, so be aware of this before making the commitment to having one.
- Dont buy a vemonous or constricting snake. Makes sense right? A vemous snake is an extremely dangerous animal and it isnt wise to have one as a pet and once constrictors put there grip on its very hard to get them to let go.
