Puppy Barking is Puppy Communication
By Dog Lover | May 10, 2009
Canines bark, so a puppy barking is a completely normal phenomenon. Be prepared for puppy barking, whining and howling when you bring them home as it is what they do! If you have a dog that you love, you know that you are going to hear plenty of barking, whining, and howling at almost any time. There is no way to train your puppy to stop barking completely and you would not want him to anyway. However, it is really ideal for you, your neighbors, as well as your dog, if barking fits can be placed under control.
Why Dogs Start Barking
Dogs who are confined or alone a lot without exercise store up energy and need an outlet for it. A dog who is alone all day is more likely to take up barking as a hobby because there is nobody to control him and make him stop. Pretty soon, barking will become an enjoyable habit for him or her. And for a great number of dogs, once they start barking, they continue to do so just for the sheer fun of doing it.
You may have trained your dog to bark too much by accident. You always obey when you hear your dog speak. When the dog barks, you let him out. When he barks again, you let him back in. If he barks, he gets his tummy rubbed; therefore, barking is a behavior that is rewarded. Puppy barking gets your attention and so they easily fall into this trap because the very nature of it gets your attention and they get what they want. You need to reward your dog when they are not doing any barking.
Barking and Exercises
To minimize puppy barking and for you to get some peace and quiet, you have to realize that most of the time; puppy barking is really due to the boredom, loneliness, frustration and fright that your puppy feels. These entire situations can be eased and improved when you spend more time with your puppy. A well-exercised, happy, and contented puppy is more likely to spend the whole day sleeping when you are not home. Try to take the time to give your puppy exercise, playtime, and proper training.
Puppy obedience training is just as boring mentally for dogs as it is for their owners. Most puppies and dogs enjoy, wild rapid paced and exciting games such as “come here,” “sit,” “stay,” “heel,” but you can make it more rewarding by saying come here for a hug, a massage and other praise and treats. Try to think of new training ideas for your puppy so it won’t get bored.
For dogs living in the backyard for the majority of the time, they probably need some “social” exercises. Puppy barking will lessen if you walk them around your neighborhood. Puppies find daily walks an adventure because of all the exciting sounds and smells they can investigate when they are outdoors. Dogs and puppies will run around outside and have fun, but this is not necessarily exercise. What they are doing is equivalent to the human’s pacing and fidgeting as well as other nervous activities. Be sure your dog or puppy has something to do to keep busy. Puppies love to have chew toys for puppy biting, and big dogs enjoy a digging pit.
Canines are social animals. They are just like us. They need companions and friends. Your dog needs to be taken for walks and exercised every day or every week as well as to let them socialize with other dogs. Romping, playing, and dog training together all day will tire them out easily and will help them sleep happily while recovering from the hard play and great exercise session.
